Who do I contact for Religious Education and sacramental preparation for children who are not in a Catholic school?

Where and when are lessons held?

Lessons are generally held after school at the parish and last for one hour. The day on which they are held and the exact time varies from parish to parish.

What age (or school year level) are Sacraments celebrated an how long does preparation take?

The Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are generally celebrated at ages 8 and 9 respectively (Years 3 and 4). Preparation for these sacraments is conducted over a two-year period. The Sacrament of Confirmation is generally celebrated in the last year of primary school (whether Year 6 or 7). It is recommended that preparation for Confirmation is conducted over a two-year period also. Detailed Policies relating Penance/Eucharist and Confirmation are available.

Are there any provisions for children with special needs?

Parishes make provisions for the religious education and sacramental preparation of children with special needs. They are supported by the Personal Advocacy Service who you can contact directly.


I have older children who have not received the sacraments. What do I do?

Speak to your Parish Priest who will ensure your child is placed in the appropriate program.
