Student Press Gallery – St Joseph’s Primary School Waroona

Year 5 students from St Joseph’s Primary School Waroona recently took part in the “Student Press Gallery” – a live to air segment run by ABC Radio Perth. The segment involves a group of students attending the ABC studios to take on the roles of journalist and broadcaster by interviewing a special guest live on air.

This week former Chief Scientist of WA Lyn Beazley dropped by the studio to face questions from St Joseph’s students Charli Brown, Halle Simpson, Jye Martelli and Danny Stokes.

Armed with a clear understanding of her career in science, the students were able to ask Lyn a broad range of questions about her role as Chief Scientist of WA, various research projects she has been involved with as well as what she likes to do when she’s not working. Lyn was certainly up to the challenge and gave the students and listeners an insight into her esteemed career as well as her hopes for the funding of future projects.

Principal of St Joseph’s Karmela Messineo attended the session and was able to witness the students’ foray into broadcasting firsthand.

“Professor Beazley was lovely and the staff at the ABC, were welcoming and friendly and all took the time to put the students at ease. The whole experience was a wonderful opportunity for our students to be involved in,” said Karmela.

The Student Press Gallery initiative has been running across 2014 and many Catholic Schools across the metropolitan area, have had the opportunity to participate.
